I have always held that writers don’t really have biographies, and that the best way to find out about them is to read their books. But I realised that if I had to approach my 58-year-old life in that way I’d never write more than a single page. An alternative version of this approach would be a CV listing the places where I was educated and the academic results achieved. Then I would see my life as a linear process, gradually accumulating knowledge and experience, even leading towards a goal of some kind. I’d like to write this autobiographical sketch in a concise, chronological way, based on the reliable passage of time and its usual markers – the years.
